The Islamic Republic of Pakistan


 The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is an independent Islamic country located in a defensive part of North Asia, Northwest Central Asia and West Asia.  With a population of 21 crore, it is the fifth most populous country in the world.  With 881,913 square kilometers (340,509 square miles), it is the 33rd largest country in the world.  It is bounded on the south by a coastline of 1046 km which joins the Arabian Sea. Pakistan is bordered by India to the east, China to the northeast and Afghanistan and Iran to the west.

 Mountains of Pakistan

 Pakistan is home to 108 peaks above 7000 meters. There is no number of peaks above 4000 meters above 5,000.  Five of the 14 highest peaks in the world (more than 8,000 high) are in Pakistan.  (Four of which are located in the kidneys of Concoria, the confluence of the Baltoro Glacier and the Godinst Austin Glacier).  The highest peaks in Pakistan are located in the Karakoram Mountain Range (located almost entirely in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan).

 The Tarbela Dam (or National Dam) is the largest river in Pakistan, located on the Indus River.  The dam was completed in 1974, making it the second largest reservoir in the world.

   Mangla Dam

 The Mangla Dam was built on the Jhelum River in 1967 and can store 5.9 million acres of water. The Rasool Barrage was built on the same river in 1967.  Two canals have been dug from the river Jhelum. The Lower Jhelum Canal was dug in 1901 from Rasool in Gujrat district.  Water flows from Mangla to Chenab river.

   Ghazi Brotha is a hydropower project built on the Indus River.  The project, which started regular power generation in August 2003, has provided about 53 billion units of electricity to the national grid in the last eight years, resulting in a revenue of Rs. 226.50 billion to the national exchequer.

 Major cities of Pakistan.

 Among the 10 largest cities in the country, Karachi ranks first, Lahore second and Faisalabad third.  The population of Karachi increased by 59% while the population of Lahore increased by 116%.  The population of Karachi in 1998 was 93.39 million and that of Lahore was 5.143 million.  Faisalabad, the third largest city in the country, has a population of 2 million to 3.2 million. Rawalpindi is the fourth largest city. Its population has increased from 1 million to 2 million. Gujranwala's population has increased from 1.1 million to 2 million.  It is number five.

  Pakistan's total population in the census is 132.01 million rural and 75.67 million urban population.

 The population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2017 was 35 million 10 thousand while the population of FATA was 49 million 90 thousand.

 Punjab is the largest province in terms of population with a total population of 1099.9 million and Sindh has a population of 47.85 million in the 2017 census.

  The population of Balochistan is about 12.34 million while the population of the federal capital Islamabad is said to be 2 million.

 By religion, 96.47% of the total population is Muslim, followed by 1.27% Christian, 1.73% Hindu, 0.09% Ahmadi, 0.41% Scheduled Caste and 0.02% others.
