 The moon  is a planet of our earth.  Some 240,000 miles from Earth.  Its diameter is 2163 miles.  Galileo made the first inquiries about the moon in 1609.  He said that the moon is a sphere like our earth.  He also expressed the view that the moon has mountains and the mouths of volcanoes.  There is neither air nor water in it.  Due to the absence of which no signs of life are found on the moon.  This has been proven by manned aircraft.  During the day it is very hot and at night it is cold. The moon was born within 60 million years of the formation of the solar system and its age is close to 4.6 million years.

   From Earth we always see only one side of the moon.  This is because the axial rotation of the moon and the period of rotation of the moon around the earth are the same.  We can see about 41% of the moon from the earth at any one time if the moon is full.  But that part changes a bit and we can see more than half of the moon at different times which is 59% but can't see more than 41% at a time.  The moon completes its orbit around the earth in about 29 days and 8 hours.  During this time its distance from the earth increases and decreases.

 وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتّٰى عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُوْنِ الْقَدِیْمِ (2)

  And for the moon We have appointed stages, until it is like an old date-palm (twig). We have appointed stages for the moon. The moon has twenty-eight stages.  It does not move less or more, it covers all the destinations from the date of its rise to the twenty-eighth day, and if the month is thirty then two nights and twenty-nine, then one night and when it reaches its final destination.  When I arrive, it becomes like an old palm branch. The moon has a deep connection with our solar system, the planet and our society.  The moon's magnetic field creates tides in the oceans.  The effects of the rising moon also appear on plants and animals.  The moon is also a part of our literature and art and in ancient religious beliefs it has the status of gods and goddesses.
